Whoa, it was never my intention to brag To steal it all away from you now But God does it feel so good 'Cause I got him where I want him now
Back when Paramore first broke through in the emo/pop-punk world, Hayley Wlliams was just a teenager. And she wrote songs about angst and heartbreak and a lot of really, really dumb ideas. Because that's the thing that teenagers do. So no one should have been all that surprised when her band releases a song that condones getting revenge on an unpleasant girl from her high school by stealing her man. Well, by "stealing" I of course mean "sleeping with him while he's still technically seeing that other girl." That's...that's the same thing, right? Some critics have questioned Williams' assertion that she can be the feminist icon she wants to be, considering she wrote a song where she's incredibly proud to take part in the violation of someone else's sexual exclusivity. But again, she was a teenager when she wrote this. When I was a teenager, I wrote a poem about how I wanted to blow up the moon to be noticed by the girl in my Political Science class. Does that mean I can't ever work for NASA? (No. At least not for that specific reason.) She's recently expressed her shame in writing lyrics like "Once a whore you're nothing more, I'm sorry, that'll never change." Williams has distanced herself from that "narrow-minded perspective" and claims it was ripped directly from a page in her diary.
