9 Weirdest Marketing Gimmicks Ever Used To Sell Music Albums

7. :zoviet*france: Tries To Give You Cancer

A industrial noise band called :zoviet*france: (with added punctuation marks for extra authenticity) has a history of absolutely crazy album packaging ranging from burlap sack liners to cassettes with creosote soaked inlays. (It's worth noting that creosote can cause cancer, and if it was left in the case too long it would fuse to the album.) Their piece de resistance, however, was probably Popular Soviet Songs and Youth Music which came packaged as two cassette tapes packaged inside a ceramic pot. Also included in this "potted set" was a silk American flag with the Communist Hammer and Sickle logos in place of the traditional stars, a sharp stick, and some radioactive seagull feathers for good measures. No joke. There was apparently an instruction booklet telling confused consumers what to do with these individual elements, just in case it wasn't obvious how you're supposed to properly utilize nuclear bird feathers.
