9 Weirdest Marketing Gimmicks Ever Used To Sell Music Albums
8. Alice Cooper Flip-Top Desk And Fire Hazard Panties
Alice Cooper is weird. Let's just get that out of the way. So when he wanted to release a vinyl record with a sleeve that opened up into a school desk, people just went with it. And when he wanted to put a pair of women's underwear "inside" that desk...sure, let's do that, too. His reasoning for the special packaging is classic, weird-as-hell Alice Cooper: When a kid returned to school after the weekend, he would totally have a trophy from his debaucherous weekend tucked away inside his desk. And that would make him awesome. So...make a fake version of that for the record already. His follow-up thought: "What else might be inside his desk? A switchblade? Notebooks?" Because Alice Cooper's brain is made entirely of Freaks and Geeks episodes. Unfortunately for every pre-teen who'd hoped to snag a pair of girly underwear without actually working for it (like a fraud!), the album's panties were deemed a fire hazard by the FTC and all of the copies had to be recalled.
