Alter Bridge: 10 Hidden Song Details You Never Noticed

5. The Trilogy Of Songs On The Last Hero

As said before, though The Last Hero isn’t quite a concept album like ABIII, it does hold several running themes throughout. The key, and most prominent theme, is uncertainty and disillusion in volatile times, and putting faith in so called heroes to bring balance and peace.

Three songs that play to this theme are Show Me A Leader, This Side of Fate, and The Last Hero. However, they aren’t just based around a similar theme, they are three parts of the same story. Something of a trilogy within the album itself.

Opening with Show Me A Leader, the band tell of fear in trying times. Of searching for someone to help but finding nothing but more disillusionment. The story progresses through This Side of Fate halfway through the album, as a choice has been made in order to move forward, but there are soon regrets, questions as to whether the choice was the right one, and living with the consequences of your actions.

The final chapter in the mini narrative is The Last Hero, as these consequences come into full effect. The subject realises that they need help in getting through these times, as it comes back full circle to needing a hero.

It’s not hard to see where the inspiration for this came from.
