Arctic Monkeys: 10 Underrated B-Sides (That Deserved To Be Album Tracks)

9. Despair In The Departure Lounge (Who The F*** Are Arctic Monkeys, 2006)

Now we know this one's cheating a bit as Despair in the Departure Lounge isn't technically a B-Side (it was included in the band's 2006 EP Who The F*** Are Arctic Monkeys), but it never made it onto a full-length record and is way too good to leave off our list.

One of Arctic Monkeys' sweetest and rawest songs, Despair follows a recently heartbroken fella who isn't able to enjoy himself on holiday, largely told from the perspective of a mate: "Don't even try & cheer him up, because / It just won't happen".

Anyone who has ever been on holiday shortly after a breakup will know what it's like to feel miserable when everyone around you is having fun, but simple moments of realisation such as "She won't be waiting for you when you land" are enough to pull anyone's heartstrings.

Alex Turner, being the fabulous songwriter that he is, wasn't content with leaving the song as a simple meditation on heartbreak in holiday, and managed to drop a few universal musings into the mix. "It seems as we become the winners / You lose a bit of summat / And half wonder if you won it at all" the singer croons, asking whether their achievements were worth trading their old life for, ex-partner and all.
