Black Sabbath: 10 Most Underrated Songs
8. When Death Calls - Headless Cross
The late '80s wasn't necessarily a great time to be in Black Sabbath. With any semblance of the original lineup all but gone and Iommi holding together the fragments of the group, there was pretty much no hope for Sabbath to see any kind of humongous success any time soon. Then again, how the hell did we let something as badass as When Death Calls slip under the radar?
You might not have caught it from the first few listens, given that the foundation of the tune is the same typical Sabbath sound that came from both the Ozzy and Dio-less iterations of the group, but there's something about the solo that's so...un-Iommi. While it is still heavy as hell, there's a certain type of precision that you wouldn't have found on most other Sabbath albums.
Unbeknownst to the hardcore rock fans, many of the actual guitar accentuations were done by Brian May of Queen, who had been friends with Iommi since the group's early days. As opposed to just the regular song you were hearing, this song turns into one of the greatest guitar duels that no one knew existed, as Iommi's dirty tones go up against May's symphonic accuracy. Despite sifting through a lot of boring stuff in Sabbath's middle period, this is one of those rare tunes that shows subtle hints of brilliance.
