Bloodstock Festival 2018: 10 Things We Learnt

1. Gojira Are The Best Metal Band On The Planet

Going into Bloodstock 2018, Gojira were the wildcard; the risk; the make-or-break headliner. And finishing off the Saturday between Friday’s Judas Priest and Sunday’s Nightwish – two of the most bombastic, operatic and beloved bands of their genre – only makes the slot even more teeth-chattering for fans looking for this tech-death juggernaut to finally earn their spot as one of modern metal’s leading lights.

Thus, it feels hugely relieving to report that not only did the French extremists hold their own among their esteemed company, but they totally blew them out of the water while also drawing the largest crowd of the entire weekend.

As a result, it is no longer a stretch to call Gojira the best metal band on planet Earth. Their impossibly intense live show has found itself evolve with an LED backdrop displaying the Duplantier brothers’ beautiful artwork and is also bolstered by a perfect catalogue that contains literally no bad songs.

Furthermore, it feels like Gojira have only scratched the surface of their onstage potential, with such powerful and popular cuts as “Low Lands”, “Global Warming” and “Magma” yet to make an appearance in a setlist, but each ready and waiting to be a surprising and crowd-popping entrant.

Bloodstock Festival 2019 will be held at Catton Park, Derbyshire from the 8th to 11th August.
