Coldplay: The Best Song On Each Studio Album
7. Fix You - X&Y
Some of Coldplay's songs are excellent at delving into loss and pain while still offering hope, and Fix You is no exception.
Chris Martin wrote this song for actress Gwyneth Paltrow, his wife at the time, to comfort her after the death of her father. However, this track can be applied to countless situations because of how the lyrics detail universal feelings like grief and disappointment. As such, this is a supremely personal song for many people.
The music itself serves to heighten the emotions that arise when hearing the touching lyrics. The organ has a strong presence throughout much of the track and piano enters about a quarter of the way through, with guitar not far behind it.
By the time the guitar solo rolls around listeners are totally drawn in, and it's at that moment that Will Champion makes his entrance on the drums. The music swells and builds as Chris, accompanied by background vocals, drives the point home that things will be alright and he is there to support Gwyneth.
It's both heartbreaking and reassuring, bringing listeners on a striking emotional journey in just a few short minutes.
