After the disappointment that was Revival, Eminem had a lot to prove. Even if he hadn’t dropped a full album in Kamikaze, this song alone would have been sufficient proof that he still had it. Aggressive, funny, potent, catchy; The Ringer had it all.
Em dances from flow to flow, speeding up and slowing down, whilst addressing everything from his BET freestyle to mumble rap, and mentioning a few names along the way. Though it feels more like a freestyle, it’s a perfect opener to Kamikaze and sums up exactly the kind of album you’re about to hear.
The Ringer drew listeners in, and in some cases, drew fans back to the world of Slim Shady. For the first time in a long time there was a genuine, almost nervous excitement going into the rest of the album, as following this track, everyone knew, all bets were off.
