19. Black Treacle
Sticky sweetness has been a key motif of Arctic Monkeys since the beginning, and Black Treacle is the poetic accumulation of it all. Taking inspiration from David Bowie, Turner waxes poetically on this song and keeps it intentionally vague: some believe it’s about a man in love with a drug addict, others see it as about experiencing something that gets progressively darker.
Black Treacle shows the band’s versatility and the verses are world class, however the choruses leave a little to be desired at times, though as always, the guitar work is fantastic and nostalgic.
This song falls on a sorely underrated album however it’s definitely not as good as it gets for the band.
