Every Beatles Album's Opening Track Ranked From Worst To Best
6. Drive My Car - Rubber Soul
Rubber Soul from 1965 marked a huge shift in The Beatles’ music.
Though the jangly love songs were still there, folk had started to muscle in, as the band started to imitate the likes of Bob Dylan. They also started smoking pot around this time, which was surely pure coincidence…
And then there’s Drive My Car, a rocky story song about a wannabe film star flirting with her chauffer.
Drive My Car has its tongue so firmly in its cheek that it’s shocking it doesn’t just burst straight through. Cheesy lyrics about the man’s prospects are sung with a knowing nod to the audience, all of whom are in on the joke.
There’s a lot going on musically; Paul’s bassline is chuggy and catchy, there’s a piano in there, and Ringo’s gotten a hold of a cowbell.
The Beatles were so sure of themselves at this point that they were able to play around a bit more with their music and take a few risks. Drive My Car could have come across as just a novelty song, especially in the many decades since its release, but it has retained its place as a staple of The Beatles’ catalogue.
