Every Billy Joel Album Ranked Worst To Best
7. Storm Front
Marking a striking change in Billy Joel's backing band's line-up, Storm Front was released in 1989 and saw the singer reach for new heights. More unfiltered and honest than ever, the album features the epic "We Didn't Start the Fire," an anthem that chronicles the ups-and-downs of politics and pop culture from the 1940s until the year the album came out.
Opening with the hair-metal inspired "That's Not Her Style" and featuring one of his more underrated tracks with the brilliant "The Downeaster Alexa," Storm Front finds Joel reaching for a more modern sound, and pulling it off with almost every track. The only blip on the record comes courtesy of "I Go to Extremes," which sounds as though he's reaching too far out of his comfort zone in an attempt to be different.
Still, by this point in his career, Joel has already done it all, from jazz to soul, funk to rock, pop to synth, and Storm Front paints a portrait of an artist who just wants to have some fun and mix things up, perfectly comfortable with taking risks.
