Every Billy Joel Album Ranked Worst To Best

8. River Of Dreams

Joel's second-to-last album, River of Dreams is a rock-heavy effort bursting with spirituality. From the opening chords of the socio-political anthem "No Man's Land" to the spiritual melodies of the title track, the album adopts a much more mature and serious tone than Joel's other records, with many songs referencing environmental issues and themes of love and pain.

Many listeners consider River of Dreams to be one of Joel's weaker efforts, with emphasis often put on how his voice doesn't mesh too well with the rock sensibilities running through the record. Looking at the album as a whole, though, this doesn't seem too fair an assessment. Not only does Joel's voice work with the tone of the record, but the whole thing listens like an artist who is at peace with his career and ready, perhaps, to move on.

River of Dreams was the last album Joel sang on, and was released back in 1993. After its release, he took to touring, deciding he had said all he needed to say and had nothing left to prove. Listening to the album, that shines through on every track.
