Every Blink-182 Album Ranked From Worst To Best
5. California - 2016
Had this list been written in 2016, California wouldn't even be on this list due to my feeling of personal betrayal that Blink-182 could exist in this universe without Tom Delonge. Four years later, the head is clear of prejudice... and it's actually a really good record.
Right from the opener, Cynical, a two-minute thrash that's as punk-related as anything Blink has put out this millennium, you get the sense of a little more cohesion within the new threesome. Delonge's forward-looking stadium rock compositions have been replaced by Matt Skiba's extraordinary songwriting prowess and the harmony between him, Hoppus, and Barker is a nice respite from the turmoil that surrounded Delonge's fractious departure.
There are issues; the two skit songs are more cringey than funny at this point, and Skiba hadn't quite stamped his own seal on the band yet. San Diego and Los Angeles are soaring examples of what the Alkaline Trio frontman could - and would - bring to the band (I guess he really likes the state of California), and Bored To Death was a perfect choice for the lead single. A welcome transition from Neighborhoods to the 'new' Blink-182.
