Bob Dylan was quick to join the criticism for Self Portrait, an album he claimed to have made as a "joke" so people would stop referring to him as the "spokesman of a generation."

Whatever the motivation, Self Portrait received a critical panning, but isn't quite as bad as its detractors would have you believe. Sure, the surreal, satirical structure grates and leaves the overall tone inconsistent, but the lyrics and daring of Dylan's vision grows on you over time, and the sheer originality of the record has to be commended.
