9. Going Out In Style
Going Out In Style is DKM's seventh album as well as their first foray into the concept album. It delves more deeply into Irish folk than previous albums and features a killer cover of "Peg O' My Heart" featuring Bruce Springsteen. Going Out In Style is the tale of fictional dead man Cornelius Larkin as he looks back over the events of his life.
Stylistically, Going Out In Style finds the band dipping a little more deeply into their Irish folk roots than was heard on The Meanest of Times. "The Hardest Mile" leans into a Flogging Molly brand of Irish, while "Broken Hymns" brings a slow, Celtic gravitas to the record.
Standout tracks include "Going Out In Style", "Hang 'em High", the aforementioned "Peg O' My Heart" and a toe-tapping, revved up version of Irish staple "The Irish Rover".
Some of the conceptual tunes drag the album down a bit through the middle, but there are enough songs you won't skip over to make it worth the ear time. It may not scratch the hardcore itch some DKM fans pine for, but as a whole Going Out In Style brings out the Irish side in everyone.
