Every Green Day Album Opening Song Ranked From Worst To Best

11. 2000 Light Years Away - Kerplunk

Before they broke through into the mainstream or were even signed to a major label, Green Day put out two independent records between 1990 and 1991. The second was Kerplunk, which sadly isn't about the board game, and it opens with a song about that most universal of themes; a long-distance relationship.

2000 Light Years Away was written by Armstrong for his girlfriend at the time, Adrienne Nesser, who lived in Minnesota. Armstrong, who was based in California at the complete opposite end of the country, pined for his distant lover, and thus put his feelings into song.

The track is a decent little Ramones-style punk number, but it doesn't have a great deal to say beyond "It sucks that you live so far away". Whilst this is a very valid thing to be upset about, Green Day would go on to tackle much more exciting topics in the future.
