Every Lana Del Rey Album Ranked Worst To Best

3. Ultraviolence

For many, Ultraviolence will always be Del Rey's crowning achievement, and it's easy to see why. This was the record that cemented her as a true pop icon, willing to put herself fully on display in hopes of creating a great record and singing away her pain and innermost thoughts.

Masochistic, sexy, confrontational and almost uncomfortably dark, the album tackles themes such as depression, abuse and love with both poetic dreaminess and surprisingly bleak imagery, and does it with a wonderful sense of cool humour and confident self-awareness.

Whether she's singing about how pretty she is when she cries, or how broken a past relationship was in the title track, Del Rey packs on a powerful vocal performance to counter the music's sombre tone and explosive honesty.

Ultraviolence is a nostalgic, sweeping narrative of lost loves and 50s jazz, and the results make for one of modern pop's most unique records. The fact that it isn't any higher here just goes to show how fantastic Del Rey is at her best.
