Every Muse Album Ranked Worst To Best
4. Drones
There are probably many Muse fans shaking their heads right now as to why this is so high on the list. Let me be clear: this album is not the best by a long shot. Drones does have a concept based around a tech apocalypse as a result of drone strikes. While this concept is interesting for sure, it does make for some ill-advised moments like the "Drill Sergeant" interlude into the song "Psycho."
Other than those moments though, this record does have a raw aggression to it that was missing from Muse releases at the time. Songs like "Psycho" and "Reapers" show the band at their most uninhibited musically, with the latter featuring Matthew Bellamy annihilating his fretboard with a tapping intro. The album has the right amount of slowburns as well like love song "Aftermath" and the choir-like vocals of the title track.
The production of super-producer Mutt Lange helped the band get back to basics and create fantastic singles like "Dead Inside" and "Mercy." In that respect, Drones is an album that is the best of both worlds by combining the epic size of their later material with the punk anger of their early days. What's not to love?
