Every Muse Album Ranked Worst To Best
2. Origin of Symmetry
The group's second outing kicked down the door for mainstream rock. In the wake of Radiohead's ascent, many bands like Coldplay and even Muse themselves were being seen as slightly derivative. As a response, Origin of Symmetry shows Muse at their most visceral and angry.
This record is the closest thing to a punk album that the band have ever released from a sonic perspective. Songs like "Hyper Music" and "Plug In Baby" have a decidedly harsh assault that tears your head off from their opening notes. This album also shows more prog-rock styles creeping in on "Space Dementia" and especially the epic "Citizen Erased," which has since become a favorite amongst Muse devotees.
Since the band were still trying to grasp their sound, more sophisticated eclectic moments appear on the quiet acoustic cut "Screenager" and their cover of the old standard "Feeling Good." On the other hand, when you listen to songs like "New Born" and "Bliss," you can hear the true Muse identity falling into place. There is a certain sense of paranoia and dread in this record, but with an energy that makes you want to pump your fist in the air every time you listen.
