7. Is This The World We Created…? - The Works

Keeping things reflective (but at a much lower volume) is Is This The World We Created…?, the grand finale to 1984's The Works.

This song is a musing on the state of modern society, inspired by images of famine-stricken Africa. Mercury soulfully sings about hungry children, corporate greed, and other such sins, all whilst May accompanies him on the acoustic guitar.

A song like this could easily stray into saccharin territory, but there's just something about Freddie's angelic voice that makes these well-trodden points hit home. It's also tastefully written, mostly avoiding cliché, and the guitar fits the vibe without ever straying into pastiche.

Some people will hate this song, and that's fine, but good luck explaining your artistic choices to St. Peter when it's your time to face the pearly gates.
