Every Wings Album Ranked From Worst To Best
2. Venus And Mars
Band On The Run’s success seemed to help McCartney locate some self belief that was missing on the first couple of Wings albums. Venus and Mars is a supremely confident record, for better and (slightly) worse.
On the one hand the album is filled with gems like the aching soul pop of Call Me Back Again or the airy title track.
On the other, the expensive, polished production sometimes feels a little too slick and perhaps it’s overconfidence that led Paul to make a couple of the slightly naff, off-putting choices of which he is sometimes guilty.
One is the slightly jarring supervillain interlude in the middle of the otherwise great Rock Show. Another is the decision to close the album on a cover of the theme from cheapo British soap Crossroads.
Still, overlook the odd blemish and this is largely a very good album indeed.
