3. What The Water Gave Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=am6rArVPip8 She's back in the water and drowning again, but it's not a song of sorrow at all, rather a celebration of how you feel when life's amazing. "What the water gave me" just builds and builds musically and lyrically; it takes a breath and then blasts through to a huge crescendo. When I first heard this I thought it sounded like Spiritualized with Kate Bush on vocals, yes, it's that good. This was the comeback song after "Lungs" and the proof that she was no one trick pony. The video was released with little fanfare and looks like it was made on a budget of about fifty quid, but it is certainly her most fun one yet and truest to their vision, it sums up what Florence and the Machine are, they're lost in the music, and literally jumping for joy at the song they've made. Who could have predicted that a tour de force song that exuded such confidence and self-belief could have been written in a story about Virginia Wolfe? Well probably Florence could have done all along, this is what all of the songs about water have been leading to a celebration of being yourself. So what keeps this masterpiece out of the top two?
