Florence Welch: Her 10 Best Songs

2. Cosmic Love

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EIeUlvHAiM Florence's first truly heart breaking song, and her lost classic. I could just copy and paste the lyrics and have you on your knees, and whilst it makes a fantastic poem, it's a song that stays true to what she's best at musically. Every instrument works to bring the words to life, whether that's the bass drum mimicking the sound of her heartbeat, the harp to make the sound of her melancholy, not a second is wasted. Again, she compares the power and intensity of her love to nature €“ this time the stars and the moon €“ but it doesn't in the least sound pretentious, this isn't self-indulgent misery but a genuine statement of devotion. This is a love song of such selflessness it deserves to be right up there with classics such as "There is a light that never goes out" and "Running up that hill". And the words are so good that I can't leave some of them out "The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out, you left me in the dark. No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight. In the shadow of your heart" John Keats €“ eat your heart out.

What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about. As well as writing for What Culture, I occasionally write a blog http://tedney.blogspot.co.uk and sometimes use Twitter, but sparingly @TedneyNash
