Best of all, it didn't sound like a vain attempt to rock out that most ageing rock stars succumb to. It sounded refreshed, like all the pent up tension from the last few albums of softening released all at once. From 'The Colour And The Shape' we've all pogoed in some sweaty indie nightclub to 'Everlong', one of alternative rock's finest moments. The sane can be said for 'All My Life' from 'One By One' - a track which channelled Dave Grohl's inner Josh Homme into a juddering and insistent career highlight. Even the comparitively softened 'Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace' had a song as fearsome as 'The Pretender' to kick off proceedings and supremely whet the appetite. Dave Grohl and co. have always been good for a rollicking lead single or two, even though the albums have sometimes flattered to deceive.
