Grammy Awards 2016: Predicting The Winners

9. Best Rap Performance

Nominees: J.Cole; Drake; Fetty Wap; Kendrick Lamar; Nicki Minaj Who Should Win: Fetty Wap If you were alive in 2015, there is no way that you could have escaped Fetty Wap's Trap Queen. It was everywhere. His debut single became a sleeper hit on the US Billboard charts, slowly creeping up the ranks and creeping - like an earworm - into everyone's ears and brains, remaining there for the entirety of the year. Although his fellow nominees like Drake and Nicki Minaj are hailed as rap superstars, Fetty Wap exploded on to the music scene in such a powerful way that you couldn't not enjoy the infectious and positive vibes from both the lyrics and the production. Although the song is a little gimmicky, Fetty Wap's peculiar singing voice compliments his raps. If this song comes on in a club, the dance floor becomes packed, everybody gets their twerk on - is that still a thing people do? - and Fetty literally traps us there with his catchy performance until the song is over. Minaj's Truffle Butter showcases her exceptional rapping abilities, but the song becomes fairly monotonous as the melody remains the same throughout all three major rap verses. Trap Queen trapped us all in a positive, funky place, whereas Truffle Butter feels quite safe and ultimately dull for the usually outrageous Queen Barb. Rap heavyweights Drake, J.Cole and Kendrick Lamar may have all the experience, but sometimes, fans clamour for something fresh, interesting and something you can move your booty to. Stand up, Fetty Wap! Definitely worthy of winning his first ever Grammy.
