8. Best Alternative Music Album
Nominees: Sound & Color - Alabama Shakes; Vulnicura - Bjork; The Waterfall - My Morning Jacket; Currents - Tame Impala; Star Wars - WilcoWho Should Win: Currents - Tame Impala All fantastic, creative and interesting albums in their own right, Tame Impala's third studio album was absolutely magical, perhaps even trippy! The psychedelic Australian band may have shifted more towards dance-orientated music, but the essence of the rock act still remains in the interesting production and the revelatory lyrics. Currents enables Tame Impala to reach the masses, even have their music played in clubs, but the tracks on the album aren't throwaway songs we forget about after a few weeks, no, each song is as thought-provoking and whimsical as the last. It is one of those albums where you can just sit there and listen to it all the way through and never get bored. All four of the other nominees bring something unique and special to the table, but each artist has given us their respective sounds before. Tame Impala took a major risk on Currents by getting ever so close to the dance floor - a risk that has majorly paid off! It is exciting to see a music act pushing the boundaries and giving us something new. Yes, Bjork especially pushes the envelope at any given opportunity, but decades into her career, is it actually something new, or another bizarre sound to sound unique? The album received critical acclaim from numerous critics, and it's easy to see why. Tame Impala are polished lyrical and production masters; their album is slick and unlike the other four nominees, there isn't a single dud on the LP. Even Rihanna is a fan as the Bajan singer has recently covered their song 'New Person, Same Old Mistakes' on her brand new album, Anti.
