Kings Of Leon: Ranking Their Albums From Worst To Best
5. Only By The Night
950023The album that made them superstars; 2008's Only By The Night. It's a sign that if you release a song at the right time, and the stars align for you, it can change your career. This happened with two of the singles from the album; 'Sex On Fire' and 'Use Somebody'. Both songs enjoyed massive sales and chart success; 'Sex On Fire' had a 42 week unbroken streak in the UK charts alone.
Despite all this, it remains the band's most polarising album, amongst fans and critics. The punky, rock n' roll style of the previous albums was missing and replaced by reverb and echo happy numbers about relationships. It was undeniable that, technically, the band were much tighter than they had been, but fans and critics missed the good time vibe or bizzare edge that the previous albums.
Songs like 'Sex On Fire' and 'Use Somebody' are overplayed, gnawing away at people's patience whenever they come on. Songs like '17' and 'Notion' are competent but forgettable. There are some bright sides; 'Crawl' is a beast of it's own, with one of the best bass tones of modern times. 'Closer' is a great album opener that captures the mood of the album to come, but these two songs aren't enough to make an album.
