Lou Reed: His 10 Best Tracks

7. Sweet Jane

A much-covered Velvet Underground classic that Reed also took with him into his solo career, re-recording it a number of times. 'Sweet Jane' is possibly the best example of the later Velvet Underground sound, which Reed would build upon; Listing melodies, howling chorus lines, storytelling and the drone heavy, repetition of the guitar pattern. Lyrical highlights include: 'Women never really faint, and that villains always blink their eyes', 'Children are the only ones who blush and that life is just to die.'

6. Sunday Morning

'Sunday Morning' shows the other side of the coin, the more delicate sound that The Velvet Underground and Lou Reed were capable of; demonstrating Reed's range as a songwriter and performer. His comforting, listless vocal delivery seems to breeze over without a care, strangely building the perfect atmosphere for the musical accompaniment, in spite of the norm.
