Mark Tremonti's 10 Best Guitar Solos

7. Waters Rising

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyB1CNAsRjk Waters Rising sees Tremonti take up lead vocals on an Alter Bridge album for the first time since the immaculate religiously-tinged Words Darker Than Their Wings from AB III - however this time he's taking lead vocals the whole way through, rather than sharing verses with Myles Kennedy. Needless to say the song is all about descriptions of the apocalypse, and with Tremonti's aforementioned love of Celtic Frost coming through again on the lyric "This circle of tyrants will end us all right now", whichever notes and techniques that were going to go into the solo had to be some incredibly epic ones. Cut to near the end of the song and it's a really cool sliding riff that imitates the chorus line to kick it off, however the really brilliant thing about this solo is if you listen in between each high bend there's a smaller series of awesome riffs that links them together - with a particular highlight being the speed-picked smattering of notes at 4:32 on the recording. It's definitely something you have to prick up your ears to pick up on, but it's this sense of restraint and powerful subtlety that makes Tremonti's work that much more rewarding with every listen.
