Metallica: 10 Best Lars Ulrich Drum Performances
7. Spit Out The Bone
Most of the mudslinging that has been thrown in Lars's direction is due to the fact that he has had subpar live performances in recent years. Given the man's busy schedule, people accuse him of not practicing enough, which has led to him rushing and making some errors once he hits the stage.
While the live shows sometimes are hit and miss, the Metallica that goes into the studio is still a heavy metal juggernaut, which we saw in spades on 2016's Hardwired to Self Destruct. Although the title track has some great double bass work and "Now That We're Dead" brought the half time groove from their Black Album days, "Spit Out the Bone" is the one track that feels like an amalgamation of Lars's greatest moments.
The whole song feels like a journey through all the different eras of Metallica, from the intense riffs in the verses to the melodic moments in the bridge. Though the song may shift from a lyrical and melodic standpoint, Lars's backbeat is always rock solid, as he lays into his kit to create the tightest groove that the band have laid down in over 20 years. It may not replace the classic metal albums on your shelf, but "Spit Out the Bone" is right up there with the best moments in Ulrich's recording history.
