Metallica: 10 Best Songs AFTER St. Anger

8. Moth Into Flame

Moth Into Flame is one of the more anthemic songs of Metallica's more recent albums and quickly became a live favourite. All the crucial Metallica elements are present to create a modern staple of any setlist.

The guitar work is excellent and varied, morphing from muscular guitar riffing into Iron Maiden-inspired lead guitar sections. There are structural changes found throughout the song. It moves from middle and fast tempos quickly, to a compelling middle section that is liable to leave you humming. The lyrical inspiration comes from an unlikely place. Amy Winehouse and her tragic passing served as the heart of the subject matter, used by the band as an allegory of the dangers that come with fame and fortune.

Moth Into Flame is truly one of Metallica's modern live favourites. It's easy to foresee this retaining its status as a mainstay of live sets even into the next touring cycles when they have new material to show off. Perhaps not the Enter Sandman of this generation, but the closest we may get to it with an aged Metallica.
