Metallica: 10 Best Songs AFTER St. Anger

7. All Nightmare Long

All Nightmare Long started life during the St. Anger sessions. This is somewhat surprising considering the general sonic style the band achieved with it. It goes to show that some of the material they had at the time could have been great given the right treatment.

This is a monolith of metal from the band's Death Magnetic album. The main charging riff drives the song forward. Throughout the song we are treated to thumping, fast sections featuring blistering soloes from Kirk Hammett. This is atypical of modern Metallica in that it contains many different riffs, sections and is overall a long song at nearly 8 minutes in length. The lyrics delve into Cthulhu fiction once again, detailing the Hounds of Tindalos. These inescapable creatures hunt through nightmares.

In what has become a sad trend, All Nightmare Long rarely shows up at Metallica's live shows despite it being one of their best modern songs. It was heavily featured when the band were touring in support of Death Magnetic but has since faded into obscurity to some degree.

This chunk of heavy metal remains one of their best modern offerings.
