Metallica: 10 Best Songs AFTER St. Anger

5. That Was Just Your Life

In this seven minute Death Magnetic opening track, Metallica loudly announced to the world of music that they were back creating heavy, thrash-inspired music.

The heartbeat intro symbolises their resurgence and a return to making music they love. The furious riffing could have spawned from Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All or any of their 1980s albums. Its clear that the band were inspired by their own early-career output and it shows. Fast guitar riffs, James Hetfield barking about soldiers returning from war, and a more solid drumming effort from Lars Ulrich than we have become accustomed to, Metallica were back.

This bold proclamation of a song has seemingly faded from the consciousness of fans but back in 2008 it was very much the opposite. That Was Just Your Life heralded a partial return to the Metallica of old. Their newer music doesn't all sound like this but it shows a band who are no longer afraid to take on their older style, one that made them the legends they are today.
