Metallica: 10 Best Songs You Haven't Heard
1. The Wait
The $5.98 EP - Garage Days Re-Revisited is as a somewhat peculiar titbit of Metallica lore.
Named as such as a small protest against overcharging for music (with the band providing the alternative of "STEAL IT!" adorned on a sticker) and the debut release with Jason Newsted on bass, it is now considered a collector's item for fans, but UK EP regulations meant that a song had to get dropped from release and the cover of Killing Joke's "The Wait" was volunteered as tribute.
Finally seeing a more dignified worldwide release on The Met's cover album, "The Wait" is an eerie, industrial thrash belter, that experiments vocal effects on James, backed by machine-like riffs from himself and Kirk.
Even in its initial US release, it would've been glossed over in favour of the Diamond Head and Budgie covers, as well as future live staple "Last Caress/Green Hell" by the Misfits, however the searing riffs of "The Wait" added a different kind of drama and danger in the band's sound.
Having previously being free-flowing and broad with their classical music and Lovecraft-inspired songwriting, the Killing Joke cover feels more regimented and fixed, but this new era of the band match the anarchic feelings of the original completely.
