Metallica: 10 Best Songs You Haven't Heard
6. I Disappear
It's not uncommon for Metallica's music to be used in film, with thoughts immediately going to the likes of "For Whom the Bells Tolls" from the start of Zombieland or "The Four Horseman" being used for the subtlety that was X-Men: Apocalypse, but the peak of Metallica cinema (until Through the Never came out) was for the longest time this grunge-influenced rager that acted as the lead promo song for Mission: Impossible 2.
Not simply resigned to the soundtrack album or sprinkled somewhere into the movie itself, the song and its video were centred as the main hype package for Tom Cruise's latest Hollywood blockbuster.
With its video cutting between shots of the film, a performance of the song atop on sandstone butte, and various action sequences featuring members of the band, the song marked a slight shift back towards heavier material following the band's hard rock and country-influenced experiments in Load and ReLoad.
The song has also become a quiet landmark in the Metallica's history, serving as the final release to feature bassist Jason Newsted before his departure in 2001, as well as acting as the catalyst for the Metallica vs. Napster fiasco after the song was leaked online before scheduled release.
