Metallica: 10 Best Songs You Haven't Heard
7. The Prince
Throughout their career, Metallica - especially James and Lars - have talked about the influence that the New Wave of British Heavy Metal had on them in their early years, with particular appraisal aimed at the likes of Iron Maiden, Tygers of Pan Tang and Diamond Head. This mutual love for the movement brought the two together all those years ago and formed the basis over their early songwriting careers.
Ask most Metallica fans about the connection between the band and Diamond Head and the usual reference point is the former covering the latter's song "Am I Evil?" both as a b-side that would eventually appear on famed covers album Garage Inc. as well as a multitude of live performances, including at 'The Big Four' shows in 2010 with Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax.
However, The Met would honour their heroes again, covering this track from their 1980 debut Lightning to the Nations as a b-side to "Harvester of Sorrow" before also making an appearance on Garage Inc.
Whilst carrying the tone of the ...And Justice for All time period in which it was recorded (albeit with Newsted's bass amp turned on), the song matches the original beat-for-beat, offering a slab of classic thrash metal akin to their Kill 'Em All days.
