Metallica: Kill ‘Em All - Ranking Every Song Worst To Best
1. The Four Horsemen
Over the past 9 tracks, Metallica have delivered a masterclass on how to make the perfect soundtrack for the thrash scene's first few years. If they had continued going down this road though, chances are they would have stayed underground and never made it into the road warriors and metal gods that we know and love today. On the Four Horsemen, they gave us something that most of us weren't even sure the genre was capable of yet.
As much as tracks like No Remorse and Jump in the Fire are the highest quality thrash you can find, the Four Horsemen could rightfully be considered Metallica's first real episodic song. Spanning nearly 8 minutes, this song really takes you on a journey, almost like you're riding right beside the four horsemen as they come to reek havoc across the land.
While they use the best with what they're working with, transitioning from the standard thrash riffs to the breakdown gives everyone a chance to shine, from Kirk's emotive guitar solo towards the middle of the track to actually hearing the bass really well playing off of the guitars. Even though these were still just a bunch of kids trying to figure out who they were, a song like this was proof that something like Master of Puppets was still possible.
