Metallica: Kill ‘Em All - Ranking Every Song Worst To Best
5. Jump In The Fire
Now this is where things start to get a little bit more complicated. Aside from the rest of Metallica's debut, Jump in the Fire is one of the catchiest songs on the record, complete with the cascading riff and scream along chorus line. The only problem is...well...it's not really Metallica's song.
Let's back things up a bit. Before Metallica had even gotten scouted by Megaforce Records, this entire song was pretty much conceived by Dave Mustaine, bringing it to the band almost completed when they were hashing things out in the Bay Area. Once they sent him packing back to the West Coast though, James and Lars probably knew that a song like this was too good not to use, bringing their own unique approach to Dave's riffs and leaving him absolutely furious.
Then again, the performance that they gave for this version recontextualizes the riffs in a way that is quintessential Metallica. While they may keep the normal articulation and notes, the arrangement is a lot more streamlined, with Cliff Burton even playing around with the melody with his unique bass fills. Although Dave Mustaine certainly deserves all of the royalties that he gets from this song, you aren't going to see Megadeth make a song sound as tight as this.
