Metallica New Album: 10 Old-School Thrash Lessons They Need To Relearn
5. Flexible Drum Patterns
It's no real secret that Lars Ulrich's drumming style has become a bit of an acquired taste in recent years. With him taking the reins on the business side of the band's matters, his approach behind the kit as of late has been a lot more chaotic than it should be, leading to some pretty questionable live shows. Then again, the Lars Ulrich that we knew from the '80s was a different animal entirely.
For as much venom gets thrown his way, Ulrich's inventive use of the kit on Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning have made for some of the most interesting drum hooks in metal music. Though Ulrich may admit that he doesn't practice nearly enough as he probably should, it would make for a much better record if Lars returned to his original thunderous sound.
Granted, this lesson requires the most road work considering the endurance it would put him through, but if the band wanted to really go back to their original sound, Ulrich needs to put in the hours to work out his drum parts rather than bash away with wild abandon.
Ulrich's drums might not be as heavy as something like "One" as of late, but given the amount of free time he has due to the pandemic, it would do him good to hunker down and get in touch with that feral animal that he once was.
