Lazarus Dig!!! is raucous, unhinged and, as a result, is that rarest of things €“ a Nick Cave album that can be played at a party. But then comes The Night of the Lotus Eaters, and my word. Get ready to shield yourself! This one takes an ominous loop and uses it as the backdrop for a particularly paranoid rant about various states of dementia and malign forces of the occult. It keeps threatening to explode, but never, ever does. Instead, the tension is maintained throughout. The terror never truly descends. It's all about the waiting, the expectation. And that, in itself, is a form of torture for some.
