The Who: Ranking Their Albums From Worst To Best

3. Tommy (1969)

The album which thrust the Who into worldwide rock dominance, 'Tommy' is often viewed as one of the most important albums of all time, with it being the first 'rock opera' of all time. It's suffered a bit of a backlash in recent years, with some of the song's quality being put under scrutiny compared to the album's reputation. This is a little unfair, as it's a highly enjoyable listen despite its simply bonkers premise of a 'deaf, dumb and blind' boy becoming a pinball messiah. The only negative of the album is that the mix for Keith's drum's is a bit low, but other than that it's a truly superb listen. The most famous song by a mile is Pinball Wizard, allegedly only put in by Townshend so it could get better reviews off a pinball mad journalist. Still popular to this day, it's an absolute cracker of a song, with some of Pete's most catchy lyrics. The rest of the album is pretty strong. 'Go to the Mirro' has a brilliant guitar riff, 'Cousin Kevin' & 'Fiddle About' are some wonderfully creepy tunes from Entwistle with '1921', 'The Acid Queen' and 'Sally Simpson' being other highlights. Even the songs of about 10 seconds such as 'Miracle Cure' are still enjoyable and well-crafted. The closing song is again a doozy- the wonderful 'See Me, Feel Me' delivered with emotion by Roger Daltrey before crashing into the 'Listening to You' section, one of their most popular live offerings. A brilliant album, which spawned and equally insane 1975 musical film and many, many attempts of recreation. Best Song: The 'See Me, Feel Me/Listening to You' section of 'We're not Gonna Take It'
