The Who's most famous and finest effort, 'Who's Next' must also be viewed as one of the greatest rock albums of all time. A change from their previous efforts, it sees tighter songwriting from Townshend and all four members at their peak, coming together to produce something of pure brilliance. It was almost so different, the infamous 'Lifehouse' project collapsing leading to Pete falling into depression and a constant hating of this album - he's probably the only person who does. It starts off with the band's most famous song thanks to it's association with CSI - the magnificent 'Baba O'Reilly' often mistakenly called Teenage Wasteland. Showcasing Pete's new obsession with synthesisers, as well as Keith's new drumming skills it's an almost perfect song - with the famous "We're all wasted" line often heard being shouted by thousands at stadiums all around the world. The rest of the album never drops in quality. 'Bargain' has some of the most perfect rock drumming ever, 'My Wife' is a typically cheeky Entwistle song, while the middle two of 'The Song is Over' and 'Getting in Tune' are elated by Daltrey's cracking vocals. It ends with two of the band's most famous songs. 'Behind Blue Eyes' starts off as a slow, almost moving tune of loneliness before crashing into typical rock territory, while 'Won't Get Fooled Again' almost defines rock music - it's brilliant all round with the final, astonishing scream from Daltrey being one the greatest moments in rock history. A brilliant, brilliant album. Best Song: Tough to chose between 'Baba O'Reilly' and 'Won't get Fooled Again'. It'll have to be the former....just.
