RIP Storm Thorgerson: 20 Greatest Album Designs

13. Yourcodenameis: Milo €“ Rapt. Dept.

yourcodenameismilo-raptdept Despite being an internationality recognised name, with his art work hanging on millions of bedroom walls in the form of posters, Thorgerson continued to work with upcoming acts for decades. In 2004 he provided the cover for the second single of experimental, post-hardcore band Yourcodenameis: Milo, proving that even in his sixties Thorgerson was capable of producing deceptively simple but utterly memorable works of art. Rich in colour and featuring figures in retro costumes, Rapt. Dept. embodies much of what has made Thorgerson's album covers so iconic and memorable. The contrast between the two figures and the shadows the cast tells an open ended story, leaving the meaning ambiguous.

12. The Cranberries €“ Wake Up and Smell the Coffee

wakeupandsmellthecoffee There is something incredibly dreamlike about much of Thorgerson's art, and nowhere is this more evident than on the second cover he did for Irish band the Cranberries. Th hundreds of red balloons drifting across a desert landscape echoed themes he'd return to again and again, but this has to be one of the most whimsical entries on our list. There is an incredible amount of movement taking place for a still image, so much so that it almost feels like you could drift away too if you stared at it for too long.
