Saliva: 50 Best Songs From Their Career (So Far)

10. "Starting Over" - Blood Stained Love Story

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnSUr0x3QOY The #10 position goes to one of my all-time favorite Saliva songs from Blood Stained Love Story, "Starting Over". Saliva's seventh studio album proved that not only does the band know how to improve their sound, they know how to improve upon old themes as well. These improvements range from a softer/heavier touch, to a lighter touch on vocals, and maybe even a special guest appearance. But Blood Stained Love Story holds one of Saliva's finest iterations of emotional heartbreak. Dealing with the struggles of abandonment and loneliness, "Starting Over" administers a dose of personal loss when one's spouse or significant other leaves them for other endeavors. And that loss reverberates through the victim, knowing that they're forced to start over and find themselves again before ever fully recovering. It's a stunning example of human loss from a mental point of view. Declaring the the shattered heart as betrayed and broken helps understand one's situation, but there's a turning point within the song that points out an interesting turnabout: knowing that it's never too late to go back to the way things once were. Keeping that small shred of faith that things will eventually get better is more than enough. I praise "Starting Over" for its theme and telling of human emotion, but I love it for the band's love to simple music-making. Each bandmate shines here, from acoustics to drums to guitar. Even Josey Scott puts his all into the pot, making for a song that is unlike any Saliva song before it.
