Slipknot - We Are Not Your Kind: Every Song Ranked From Worst To Best

3. Orphan

Blessed with a chorus reminiscent of "Nero Forte" in its contrast of clean and harsh vocal tones, "Orphan" hits hard. It's its own song, though. Said chorus plays out over tribalistic tom work from Weinberg and screaming guitar lines from Thompson and Root, with Taylor's "I am the orphan, the one who kills your world!" immediately the album's most memorable refrain.

"Orphan" also brings WANYK's most trash metal moment in the form of a skin-flying riff kicking in following another dark, dystopian introduction. It's an incredible sequence that folds into an all-too-brief percussive stomp before the verse finally begins, driving "Orphan" towards that mesmeric hook.

This track represents the new Slipknot near their absolute best. There is experimentation in how "Orphan" builds and the chorus' nature, but it's so them, and so great. It's hard to imagine any dedicated fan making their way through its six minutes and one second without feeling satisfied.
