Slipknot - We Are Not Your Kind: Every Song Ranked From Worst To Best

9. A Liar's Funeral

Gentle acoustic strumming gives "A Liar's Funeral" a feel similar to old tracks like "Vermillion Pt. 2" and "Snuff" early on. The band lure the listener in for five minutes of trademark Softknot balladry, so you put your guard down, ready for the Iowan nonet's gentler sounds to carry you away for 5:27.

This lasts all of 40 seconds.

Taylor's roar ("LIAR!") brings forth the heaviness - a thick, doomy riff syncopated with Weinberg's pounding toms - and "A Liar's Funeral" becomes an entirely different beast.

It builds, and builds, and builds, and builds. Lumbering forward like a wounded giant, this pseudo-doom metal behemoth isn't afraid to get sludgy before the tension is finally released in a half-sung/half-screamed chorus followed by a tremolo-picked guitar line. It's a total change of pace from what has come so far, and a welcome one. If it weren't here, WANYK's dynamism would've suffered greatly - particularly as it precedes a straight-up face-melter in "Red Flag."
