Slipknot - We Are Not Your Kind: Every Song Ranked From Worst To Best
10. Critical Darling
Destined to become a huge live favourite among Slipknot fans for the rest of the band's career, "Critical Darling" absolutely rips.
Jay Weinberg is outstanding here. Never has the drummer felt so powerful behind Slipknot's kit. His barrage is as pounding as it is propulsive, helping drive his bandmates through an outstanding opening sequence with machine-like precision. They're completely locked in with one another here.
The song lurches forward with one of WANYK's more headbangable rhythms before breaking into a chest-pounding chorus reminiscent of something from Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses), though this might be where some listeners turn away. It's not quite the earworm that the hooks on "Nero Forte" and "Unsainted" are, as catchy as it is.
Things get more interesting at 4:25, when a breakdown powerful enough to level whole cities kicks in. "Oh you're so critical!" Corey roars over one of the album's heavier riffs before the track increases in pace, finally giving way to an ominous outro of dark synths punctuated by a single piano note.
