The Beatles: 10 Incredible Rarities You Can Listen To Right Now
6. That Means A Lot
This charming McCartney led track was deemed not up to scratch for the band’s Help! film and soundtrack album, which is a testament to the band’s quality control. It’s not the most memorable or distinctive track The Beatles ever recorded but it would have made a fine album track for most of their peers.
Indeed, The Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein gave the track to another of his clients, PJ Proby, who enjoyed a modest hit with the song. As John Lennon explained, “This song is a ballad which Paul and I wrote for the film but we found we just couldn't sing it. In fact, we made a hash of it, so we thought we'd better give it to someone who could do it well.”
Actually, he was a little harsh in his assessment. The Beatle’s version is reminiscent of their earlier hit Ticket To Ride and features a winsome vocal performance from Paul that carries a slightly clunky lyric over the line. Find it on Anthology 2.
