The Beatles: 10 Perfect Non-Single Tracks

4. Yer Blues: The Beatles (1968)

Even when the Beatles were doing a parody, they still managed to come out with one hell of a tune.

Hot off the back of a less than productive spiritual-pilgrimage to India, John Lennon was eager to put his frustrations and sadness into a song - and what better musical conduit than the blues. During the '60s, rock was born from British musicians feeding the blues through fed back guitars and distorted amps, but it was also a trend to adopt the vocal styles of black singers.

Lennon used the blues as the delivery method for his post-pilgrimage frustration, while simultaneously poking fun at the white musicians who were mimicking the cadence of black blues singers.

"Yer Blues" hears Lennon using stereotypical blues phrasings and lyrics, and wildly emotive guitar riffs; at times screaming in a voice not typical of his own. He intended to demonstrate that the blues was an art form beyond his skill or experience. What he delivered was a timeless blues track, demonstrating that even when he was mocking himself he was still better than most.
